Sleep
It is vain for you to rise early, To retire late, To eat the bread of anxious labors— For He gives to His beloved even in her sleep. Psalm 127:2

The Bible verse Psalm 127:2 is a message of comfort to those overworked people who try to wind down at night. There is comfort from experiencing our daily mortal limitations: God continues to work while we power off—and not just in a generally good way, but in a specific and generous way for individuals who trust in him. High Church visuals queue my mind before I power off at night. God help me to sleep, but more than that: God help me to sleep trusting that you continue to work when I do not.
This round wooden panel, half an old tabletop, was outside of a spring green building with the simple word “Thrift,” written in this exact font in Mancos, Colorado. I asked how much they wanted for the wood, but the shop owner gave it to me. That’s the kind of thrift I dream about! I wanted to uplift this scrap in the way that El Greco would paint a mural in Toledo.
Acrylic, and gold metallic acrylic, on round salvaged wood panel. 30 x 48” half circle. $3,200. December 2024.
